Every wheel balancer measures imbalance, but not every balancer measures it the same way. Understanding the difference between standard balancing and road force balancing will help you choose the right machine for your bay.
A standard wheel balancer spins the wheel and measures static and dynamic imbalance, then tells you where to place weights to smooth things out. This catches the vast majority of vibration complaints and is what most shops use day to day.
Road force balancers go a step further. They apply a load roller against the tire while it spins, simulating the weight of the vehicle on the road. This surfaces imbalance and stiffness variations that a standard spin balance can miss entirely, which is often the difference between fixing a comeback vibration complaint and sending the customer home to complain again.
For a general repair shop, a quality automatic balancer with sonar or laser-guided weight placement will cover most jobs efficiently. For a shop that specializes in tire and wheel work, or one that regularly deals with high-end wheels and low-profile tires, the extra diagnostic power of a road force balancer tends to pay for itself in fewer comebacks.
Whichever you choose, look for automatic width and diameter sensing to speed up setup, and consider how much bay space you have. Compact frames exist in both categories if floor space is tight.
