How to Choose the Right 2-Post Car Lift for Your Garage

A two-post lift is the backbone of most home and professional garages, but picking the right one comes down to a few key decisions: capacity, arm configuration, and power requirements.

Start with capacity. Most personal vehicles are comfortably covered by a 9,000 to 10,000 lb lift, but if you plan to service trucks or larger SUVs, size up rather than cutting it close. Manufacturers rate lifts for a reason, and running near the top of a lift's rated capacity regularly will shorten its service life.

Next, consider arm geometry. Symmetric lifts center the vehicle between the posts, which works well for a wide range of vehicle types. Asymmetric lifts angle the arms to shift the car's weight and open up extra door clearance, which is especially useful in tighter bays or if you get in and out of the vehicle frequently while it's raised.

Finally, check your power supply. Most 2-post lifts run on 220V single-phase power, which is standard in most home garages with a dedicated circuit, but always confirm before you buy, especially if you're retrofitting an older building.

Look for ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) certification as a baseline for safety, and budget for professional installation and anchoring rather than attempting a DIY setup for anything in this weight class.
